NOTCHLAND WELCOMES YOU TO NEW HAMPSHIRE'S SMALLEST TOWN

Most of the municipalities in New Hampshire are small towns with fewer than 1000 souls. However, there is small and then there is the smallest. That would be Hart's Location, with a population of 41 in the year 2007, placing it solidly at the end of a list of 234 New Hampshire communities. A town since 1793, Hart's Location is surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest and in the shadow of the Presidential Mountain Range.

In the center of this peaceable kingdom the little hamlet is hardly sleepy. Through time it has been the destination of internationally recognized names. The 18th century brought the first tourists. Many were guided by the Crawford family to the top of Mount Washington which to this day attracts visitors from around the world. The 19th century introduced the area as a Naturalists retreat for the likes of Emerson, Thoreau, Webster, Hawthorne and in the 20th the little mouse added to its reasons to roar by establishing itself as the first town to vote for President of the United States. Every four years the population assembles on the eve of primary & election day and at the stroke of midnight they cast their votes for the leader of the free world. This tradition continues even now into the 21st century.

A stay at the Notchland Inn can deliver nearly 15% of the Hart's Location electorate to you personally. We'll be proud to show you the town! Meet our politicians (nearly everyone must hold office), visit Town Hall (a structure with its own double life), and ask the residents you meet why they choose to live in what might be called the democratic center of the world's largest republic (if one were prone to hyperbole).
